Cobleys Solicitors Act for Lawrence Kenwright as Serious Fraud Office Investigation Dropped Before Charge

Cobleys Solicitors acted for Lawrence Kenwright in connection with a high-profile Serious Fraud Office investigation linked to Signature Group.

The investigation attracted national attention after the Serious Fraud Office announced in February 2024 that it had opened an investigation into the collapsed Liverpool-based property group, which was associated with a number of landmark property developments across the UK.

Jonathan McIlveen, Director at Cobleys Solicitors, represented Mr Kenwright at the police station stage. The firm continued to advise throughout the pre-charge investigation, working to protect the client’s position before any court proceedings were brought.

The matter has now been dropped before charge.

No prosecution will be pursued.

This is a significant outcome in a case that involved serious financial allegations, substantial public interest and considerable reputational pressure.

Serious Fraud Office investigations can be highly complex and intrusive. They often begin long before any charging decision is made and can involve arrests, interviews under caution, document requests, financial scrutiny and intense media attention.

Early legal advice is critical.

In this case, Cobleys Solicitors were involved from the police station stage and continued to provide strategic advice throughout the investigation, ensuring the client’s position was properly advanced before the matter reached court.

Jonathan McIlveen said:

“This was a serious and sensitive investigation which carried significant personal and reputational consequences for our client. We were involved from the police station stage and continued to advise pre-charge. We are pleased that the matter has now been brought to an end without any prosecution being pursued.”

Cobleys Solicitors represent individuals and businesses in serious fraud, financial crime and regulatory investigations, including matters involving the Serious Fraud Office, HMRC, the National Crime Agency and other prosecuting authorities.

If you are facing a Serious Fraud Office investigation, early specialist advice can make a significant difference.
